Turkey vulture (Cathartes aura)

It locates corpses with its keen vision and sense of smell, flying low enough to detect the gases produced by the early decomposition process of dead animals. The turkey aura feeds almost exclusively on carrion.

 

Habitat:

It is found in open country, forests, deserts, and foothills. It is most common in the open or semi-open range, especially within a few kilometers of rocky or wooded areas that offer safe nesting sites. The preferred habitats for its establishment are open savannas, this type of habitat is characterized by low-lying vegetation. In general, it avoids densely forested regions. It usually forages on small islands along the coast.

 

Diet:

Mainly carrion. It feeds mainly on dead animals and has a preference for recently dead animals. From time to time, it feeds on decaying plant matter and lives insects or fish in ponds about to dry up.

 

Resident bird with the possibility of sighting throughout the year.
