Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos)

Habitat:

It is probably the best known of all ducks. Its distribution extends throughout the northern hemisphere. This migratory bird also frequents Central America and the Caribbean and has been introduced to Australia and New Zealand.

 

This migratory bird inhabits temperate areas of North America, Europe, Asia, and North Africa. It can be found in marshes, wooded marshes, cereal fields, lagoons, rivers, lakes, bays, urban parks. It can be found in any type of aquatic habitat, although it prefers fresh water in all seasons; it only inhabits coastal waters in a moderate way, mainly in winter, in sheltered bays and estuaries. In summer, it is more abundant in meadows and in the semi-open field.

 

Diet:

Omnivore bird. Most of its diet consists of plant material, which includes seeds, stems, and roots of a wide variety of plants, especially rushes, herbs, spikes of water, Russian vine, and many others; it also feeds on acorns and other tree seeds, and various types of cereal waste. It also eats insects, crustaceans, mollusks, tadpoles, frogs, worms, and small fish. Chicks tend to feed on aquatic insects.

 

Year-round sighting is most likely in winter and spring.

 

Location:

Mainly in freshwater bodies and occasionally in lagoons.
