Coyote (Canis latrans)

The coyote (Canis latrans, meaning “howling dog”) is a species of carnivorous mammal found only in the Americas, from Canada to Colombia. They are usually solitary animals but can on occasions gather in herds.

Habitat:

Their habitats are diverse. It can live in deserts, meadows, forests, mountainous areas, tropical ecosystems, swamps, and thickets, as well as in man-occupied areas such as agricultural, urban and suburban areas.

Diet:

Coyotes are mainly carnivorous animals but can have an opportunistic omnivorous behavior. Their diet is made up of 90 percent meat and among its prey, are rabbits, birds, snakes, fish, rodents, and deer. Among their plant-based foods are mainly fruits, which vary depending on availability and ecosystem where they are found.

Location:

It can be observed in scrub and desert areas and almost the entire property of Islas del Mar including the beach where the sometimes look for food.
