Long-billed dowitcher (Limnodromus scolopaceus)

Adults have yellowish legs and a long, straight, dark bill. The plumage of the body is dark brown on the top and reddish below with the throat and chest uncovered, bars on the sides. The tail has a black and white pattern. Winter plumage is mainly grey.

Habitat:

Marshes, shallow reserves and shores; mostly freshwater. Even in coastal regions, migratory and wintering birds tend to be present in freshwater habitats such as ponds, reservoirs and upper reaches of estuaries. Sometimes it is found on open plains formed by the tide. It reproduces well to the north in wet, undulating tundra soils.

Diet:

Small aquatic invertebrates. Its diet will likely vary depending on the season. Especially in breeding areas, it feeds on many insects and their larvae, including flies and beetles, among others. During migration and winter it also feeds on molluscs, marine worms and crustaceans. Sometimes, it can feed on seeds found in herbs, reeds, water spikes and other plants.

Migratory bird with greater probability of sighting during the winter.
