Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura)

Medium size, long and pointed tail dove. It presents gray colors; brown gray on the head, back, rump, coverts of the wings and central feathers of the tail, dark gray in the flight feathers of the wings. Its beak is black, and legs are red. The distribution of Mourning doves ranges from southern Canada and southeastern Alaska to Panama. It is also present in the Bahamas and the Greater Antilles, including Cuba. In Mexico it has been observed in its 32 states.

Habitat:

It can be found in many habitats, such as farmland, cities, forest edges, open forests, mesquite areas, coastal scrublands, grasslands and in desert sites; also in urban areas. It nests in the northern and central regions of Baja California and also in the interior of Mexico, up to Jalisco and Hidalgo and sparsely in Michoacán and Oaxaca, being much more numerous in winter.

Diet:

It’s a species with hunting interest in its entire distribution. Being a granivorous species it feeds on several crops so it can feed on crop seeds and/or disperse them.

Location:

Resident species that can be found throughout the estate, mainly in areas of weeds and groves.
